Rapper returns with ‘my favourite show’
RAPPER, producer and world-record holding beatboxer Testament is to return to Liverpool’s Unity Theatre on September 19.
The multi-talented performer’s last show at the venue was Black Men Walking, an Eclipse Theatre Company and Royal Exchange Theatre coproduction which toured to sold-out venues across the UK and won great reviews.
In his new show, Testament delves into his own relationship to feminism, and attitudes to women in hip-hop – issues brought into sharp focus following the birth of his daughter. What will he discover as he starts to unpick his own prejudices?
With a dose of wit, a knack for self-deprecation and a truck-load of honesty, Testament is ready to find out.
Expect beatboxing, spoken word, storytelling and hip-hop classics as you’ve never heard them before.
Testament (aka Andy Brooks) says: “When I took my last show to Unity, the response was electric, and now I’m back with my new show WOKE.
“It was written at the same time as Black Men Walking.
“Both shows deal with stuff that I’ve been wrestling with, and there’s a crossover with race and gender – along with proper funny bits and loads of music.
“We all know Liverpool has a great sense of humour, and there are plenty of laughs as well as the serious stuff.
“WOKE is my favourite show to perform, a mix of live hip-hop, poetry, comedy, drama, thought-provoking material and crazy human beatboxing … all my best bits, innit?”
Testament has collaborated with Grammy winner Corinne Bailey Rae, Mercury nominee Soweto Kinch and the originator of hip-hop himself, DJ Kool Herc.
