Baybutt’s S&B work honoured at dinner
ED Baybutt’s hours of work and dedicated service to cricket at Southport and Birkdale were recognised last Friday when he was presented with the Peter Fay Trophy at the club’s Annual Dinner and Awards Evening.
S&B’s chairman, Tony Elwood, cited Baybutt’s readiness to take on any task that needed to be done and his willingness to do the demanding job of Cricket Secretary as two of the many qualities which had earned him the most prestigious award in the club’s gift. Baybutt received a standing ovation when the presentation took place.
However, the award of the Peter Fay
Trophy was only the climax of a good-humoured and well-attended evening which began with first-team skipper Chris Firth being presented with the Harold Wolfe Cup as captain of the side which had won the First Division of the Liverpool Competition in the season just ended.
Other highlights included Andy Warhurst receiving the Clare and Harry Holford Trophy for taking eight wickets, including a hat-trick, in the final game of the season against Fleetwood Hesketh, and 13-year-old leg spinner Matthew Hennessy being presented with a mounted cricket ball after taking five wickets, also including a hat-trick, in the third team’s victory at Formby on June 19. The President’s award, which is in the gift of Ken Standring, was won by third team skipper Alan Green for his energetic and successful development of thirdteam cricket.
And on an evening when all S&B’s teams and all the club’s workers were honoured, the second team’s player of the year trophy was awarded to Josh Hine and the corresponding honour for third team cricket was won by
James “Pip” Sumner.
The Don Stringfellow Trophy for backroom staff was awarded to John Bogie and Ken Gailey received a special award for his countless hours of service to junior cricket at S&B.
The bowling award was won by Gary Keedy, who took 58 league wickets at 9.48 runs apiece, and the batting trophy by Brad Yates, who scored 814 league runs and over a thousand in all first-team cricket. The fielding award was won by Adam Phillips and the Under 18s player of the year was Isaac Lea.
Last Monday evening Southport and Birkdale Sports Club held its Annual General Meeting, when Tony Elwood, Neil McQuaid, Tony Gadd and Mark Fletcher were re-elected as chairman, president, hon. secretary and hon. treasurer respectively.
Squash chairman Brian Birch was elected an honorary life member in recognition of his services to squash, the Club in general and also his unstinting work on the redevelopment project over the past year.
