SOUTHPORT Hesketh Round Table has announced that it will not be putting on the popular charity fireworks and bonfire this year.

The event in Victoria Park has been a fixture in the town’s diary for more than 10 years, raising tens of thousands of pounds for local charities.

Southport Hesketh Round Table chairman Dan Hubbard said that the event will return next year.

He said: “Unfortunately this year we have to make the very difficult decision not to go ahead with the event this year.

“The team of volunteers that run the bonfire started working on the 2018 event back in April, booking all the major attractions etc.”

He added: “In early September, through no fault of our own, we were faced with a significant change in circumstances affecting a major part of our plans to run the event.

“We spent weeks working with the relevant suppliers, contractors and authorities doing our utmost to make this year’s event happen.

“Given the timescales and the nature of the challenges facing us; we felt that we couldn’t deliver the event that we were ultimately happy with, nor one that the thousands of people that have supported the event over the years have become used to.

“We felt there was no option but to cancel this year’s event and plan to come back bigger and better 2019.”

Mr Hubbard went on to say that the group were sorry for any disappointment caused by the absence of the popular bonfire event.

“We are very much aware that this an established and very popular family event in the autumn calendar, and we will miss running the event this year as much as many people will miss the event itself.

“We apologise for any disappointment this may cause, and hope that everyone enjoys their bonfire night this year.

“No doubt there will be lots of other great community fireworks and bonfire displays in the area for families to enjoy over that weekend, such as Southport Rugby Club, the Lakeside Church and the Halsall Bonfire Party to name but a few.

“We would like to thank the families of Southport, local businesses and the wider community for all the support we have been given over the years; without it, such events would not be possible.

“We will be back in 2019.”
