Two days of fascination as we take village back through time

-

IMAGES of Burscough and Surrounding Areas exhibition is a free twoday exhibition, to be held in the main hall of The Stanley Club in Burscough on November 24-25.

The exhibition has lots of new photos, local films and memorabilia including a recent addition to a collection of two eight-inch diameter mortar shells from the siege of the original Lathom House (or Lathom Castle) in 1644.

They weigh 13kgs (just over two stone) each and were found in the grounds of the second Lathom House when it was demolished in 1925.

The excavation site is the project of North West Heritage.

There will also be four very large canvas prints showing aerial images of Burscough from 1970 and Ormskirk Town Centre area from 1959.

There is free parking at the rear of the Stanley Club, free teas and coffees along with Ormskirk Gingerbread and Lemon Slab cake to sample.

There will be plenty of gifts to buy including the group’s new 2019 Calendar, and there will also be a raffle.

Also attending for the weekend will be Paul Smith Ormskirk Museum with a display of artefacts and photos – and of course Paul himself who has a great knowledge of Ormskirk and its buildings.

Paul’s enthusiasm for local history is second to none.

Ormskirk and District Family History Society will be at the event for anyone seeking advice with their own family history research.

Richard Houghton of Lathom & Burscough Military Heritage Society has a wealth of knowledge on this subject, and can help with any questions you may have.

He will also have a large display over the weekend.

Also there for the weekend will be Alan Barrow who will be launching The Airmen of West Lancashire - Roll of Honour WWII, containing the profiles of 46 aircrew, and 16 ground crew from rural West Lancashire who gave their lives in RAF service.

If you know of any of the West Lancashire airmen and you have any photos/ information, Alan would be interested to see them.

The organisers request that if people have any old photos related to the local area (even old film footage), bring them on the day.
