The main speaker was Rishi Sunak MP, the Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Local Government.

He outlined the specific Local Government issues in the last budget which included among a range of funding commitments additional amounts for items such as pot holes and where Sefton will receive £1m extra for adult social care to help meet winter pressures working particularly with the NHS on bed blocking.

The seminar was chaired by Cllr John Fuller, leader of South Norfolk District Council and the lead Conservative and vice chairman of the LGA resources board, who outlined the regular series of meetings taking place with Government ministers on the next budget round.

Dukes Ward councillor Sir Ron was able to raise with the minister directly the question of social housing in Sefton, where there is an issue over authorities like Sefton which no longer have a housing revenue account and where some adjustments in policy and practice will need to be made to ensure that the new freedoms can be used to good effect by the council.

The minister indicated that he would be discussing this with colleagues in the very near future.

Cllr Watson has also had published a piece in the local government magazine First – which is distributed to all councillors in England and Wales – on the same subject.

He said: “I really feel that Sefton needs to move ahead with this agenda that’s been made possible in principle by the Government and having the opportunity to raise it in the way that I have will, I hope, be helpful.”
