PEOPLE living in Sefton have had their say on whether or not they think Bootle gets more money than Southport from the council.

Southport Conservatives say the town is a “cash cow” for the Labourled council, based in Bootle.

The town’s MP, Damien Moore, said he wants the council to support a motion for Southport to have its own town council, or “vote against it and confirm residents’ belief that Southport is nothing more than a cash cow for Bootle”.

The argument resurfaces every so often, but people cannot agree on whether or not it is true.

Reacting to the story on social media, many slammed the accusation.

Gaynor Hornby said: “I would love to know if these people who say Bootle gets all the council money spent on it have actually been an seen the state of Bootle? They are in a dream world. Bootle gets nothing and it’s getting worse.”

Lauren Davidson agreed, adding: “Oh yeah, Bootle. Land of milk and honey, playground of all the Russian oligarchs!”

Leah Singleton posted the question: “How are we robbing your money? Did you see our Christmas tree?”

Others said Southport was in dire straits.

Hilda Kingsley bemoaned the closure of Ainsdale and Birkdale libraries, while still has about “Bootle four”.

Jason Marshall simply wrote: “Southport is utterly skint.”

Some even confirmed a desire to leave Sefton.

John Triker Schofield said: “It’s time Southport went back into Lancashire. It’s gone downhill since becoming a part of Sefton.”

And a number of people blamed the Government for cuts in the region.

Jacqui MacKenzie said: “The whole of the north west has been devastated by the huge amounts of money clawed back from our councils by the government, money this region badly needs.

“But the Tories have always had a ‘divide and conquer’ mentality.”

Elaine O’Callaghan agreed, saying: “Every city, town and village in this land is struggling thanks to cuts made by this Tory government.”
