Is there no end to deceit?
PEOPLE keep saying that the Tories are responsible for austerity and we should bring back the Labour government to put things right again.
The reason we have austerity is because of the recklessness of the last Labour government under
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, but all we get is this process of deluding people.
It is a shame that Labour’s Yvette Cooper kids herself all the time because she was a brilliant student at Oxford and has a scholarship from Harvard in America.
And all this deceit doesn’t end there.
People want to legalise ‘vaping’ and cannabis because there is a vested interest in doing so, and then they want to bring the medical profession into it when it has nothing to do with them.
And then there are the lunatic car drivers who say that speed cameras are just there to make money when they certainly are not. M O’Malley

A WASTED CHANCE
THE Holocaust Memorial Service at Christ Church Lord Street on the January 27 was a wasted opportunity for forgiveness and reconciliation among people of different faiths.
The service remembered not only the victims of the Holocaust but also genocides in Rwanda, Cambodia and Darfur.
Despite being held in a major town church there was no mention of Jesus and therefore no opportunity to speak of the love and forgiveness that is available to all through Christ.
Importantly, there was no mention of forgiveness.
The minister of the church, Rev Steve McGanity, said the Lord’s Prayer from which the words “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us” appear to have been deliberately omitted.
That was a wasted opportunity to talk about forgiveness.
Unless we can forgive our enemies and those who have harmed us, we are condemned to repeat the endless cycle of murder, hatred, unforgiveness and revenge.

WELL DONE GERALD
CONGRATULATIONS to Gerald Rimmer on his 90th birthday (Visiter, January 24). Gerald and his family have a vast amount of knowledge regarding shrimping in the locality.
I suggest that relevant personnel from The Atkinson approach them to ensure that this information is not lost.
It is an important part of Southport’s history.

SPREAD THE LOVE
THIS Valentine’s Day, many parents will be looking forward to a romantic night out, leaving their children in the safe hands of a babysitter.
However, for a family caring for a seriously ill child this is not always possible due to the complexity or severity of their child’s condition, and Valentine’s Day becomes ‘just another day.’
This year to raise funds for these families, Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity is asking members of the public to create a personalised Valentine e-card where they can donate, create and download a gorgeous e-card which can be sent to their loved ones via email or shared on social media.
Every donation received will help Rainbow Trust’s Family Support Workers provide vital practical and emotional support to families when they need it most.
To create a card visit https:// rainbowtrust.org.uk/valentineecard-pr and help ensure that 14 February is more than ‘just another day.’
Thank you. Oonagh Goodman director of fundraising and marketing, Rainbow Trust children’s charity
