FREEZING conditions meant that the first BUCS rugby union and hockey fixtures of 2019 were called off.

However, this meant badminton took centre stage at Edge Hill University’s sports complex.

The men’s promotion-chasing third team were held to a 4-4 draw by Chester seconds in a competitiv­e encounter which could have gone either way, with the singles and doubles matches ending all square.

Tom Allman put in a Man of the Match display for the hosts, winning once and then running Chester’s No.1 seed close in his other game.

Ben Williams also repeated the feat in the other singles games, just missing out in his first game before overcoming injury to win his second.

The fourths claimed the most eyecatchin­g result of the three sides in action, defeating Liverpool Hope seconds 6-1 to strengthen their secondplac­ed position in Northern 6A.

Lewis Haselock made easy work of his singles games, while doubles pairings Matt Dickin and Jack Simpson, and Jared Bouch and Lewis Winship, were all victorious.

The women’s seconds made unbeaten afternoon for EHU defeating UCLAN firsts 5-3. Caitlyn Govan and Eleanor Rich won their singles games, with Kithra Glasby it an and Katelyn Ashmore proving too strong after for UCLAN’s second pairing to secure the five points needed for victory.
