Split opinion on whether Southport needs another...

-

LOCAL people are divided on their views over a planned new Sainsbury’s supermarket for Southport.

After years of discussions over the plans, many just want work to start, while others fear the possible impact on trade in the town centre.

Chris Davies said:

“It’s a fantastic thing, a boost that is needed for the empty retail estate.”

Tony Ward said: “I wish this would just open! If honest yes it will be a nightmare to get out but just look at how hard it is to get out of Tesco!”

Deb Atkinson said: “I wish they’d just get on with it! That whole area was built as a retail park so traffic would have been considered then.”

Martin Campion said: “For heaven’s sake let it go ahead. Whatever happened to competition is healthy.

“As for the town centre well, apart from M&S and a small Sainsbury’s what few other supermarkets there are so few and far scattered it won’t make one iota of difference to them.

“The town centre once upon a time a lovely place to go has been decimated by overzealous parking attendants and a very greedy Sefton Council. I am reliably informed that Bootle is not treated that way. The sooner Southport become independent again the better.”

Chris Blundell said: “I work on that park. They are starting to demolish the buildings in September.

“Also work will be starting on the existing buildings to bring them up to scratch.”

Hayley Murray said: “Town is rubbish anyway because of high rents. I’d welcome a Sainsbury’s!”

Les Jackson said: “Seriously stop interfering to try and score votes and let them get on with it.

“Worse than Brexit this farce.”

Both others in our town are not so keen, with some questioning the possibility of a scaled down scheme being built.

Del Watkins said: “If they are building a smaller store then there isn’t any point as they already have a small store (in the town centre)!

“The proposed store was two-storey with a petrol station, that will be three petrol stations within two minutes of each other, and was supposed to have a multi-storey car park.”

Harry Rimmer said: “Not needed. I think it will make no sense to congest the area with traffic that is already too busy and with Tesco and Aldi there is no need for Sainsbury’s.”

Jo Higham said: “The traffic is a nightmare now. Why would you need three petrol stations so close to each other? How will people get there unless they have a car? It is a huge blunder to consider it to say nothing of damage to Lord Street.”

Chris Lee said: “What are we going to do when everything is a supermarket?”

Vicki Ward said: “It’s not going to help. We already have enough supermarkets. Meols Cop Road and Norwood Road are already rammed.”
