LIAM Watson is relaxed about Southport’s transfer business as the club prepare for a busy several weeks ahead of the new campaign.

Southport’s National League North season kicks-off in three weeks while they began their pre-season schedule began with a clash against Wigan Athletic under-23s on Tuesday.

The Sandgrounders retained 13 of their squad from last term and Watson says he has already identified the targets he wants to bring in ahead of the trip to Gateshead on August 3.

“We have 13 contracted players,” he said. “That means we need to bring in six. One of them is a back-up goalkeeper, so that brings it back down to five people.

“We know who we want to bring in. In these training sessions there’s a couple already in. I’m not worried about who

we’re bringing in. We’re comfortable about the situation we’re in.

“That’s the beauty of the fulltime aspect. When you are fulltime you can go out and get the best loans because the clubs want them out the door to develop in a different environment.”

Reagan Ogle, Liam Edwards, Marcus Wood, Jordan Archer and Matthew Platt all had big impacts on loan at Southport last season and Watson remains hopeful of bringing more than one back.

“If you look at the five we had, every one of them was not only a good player but they were good lads,” he added.

“They settled in straight away and I’d still like to think a couple of them will come back next season.”

Watson continued: “I’m really comfortable where we are, where the pre-season is getting to and where the squad is getting to.

“It’s nice when you’ve got a good 13 signed. At least we’ve got a good XI we can put out straight away.”
