Pupils ‘Imagine’ the future

-

ALL Saints C of E Primary School in Hesketh Bank hosted their first ever Careers and Enterprise Week called ‘Imagine’, introducing a wide range of career opportunities to their pupils.

Industry experts were welcomed to the school to hold various workshops ranging from a forensic scientist to a games designer.

Lancashire Police also made an appearance in their car and van, with children getting the opportunity of switching on the sirens and dressing up in riot gear, and the school’s own in-house news team reported on all the activities and put together a special newsletter to record the day.

The event, organised by Year 4 teacher Vicky Taylor, was launched by Nicola Hurst from Southport College, who gave an assembly on the importance of learning and developing skills ready for the World of Work.

This was followed by local employer GBA Logistics, which ran an ‘On the Move’ game that the children got to play against each other and the team who made the most money won!

Jane Dawe, head of HR at GBA, said: “It was a pleasure to support All Saints with their career and enterprise week as it has given the children a view into some of the different

opportunities open to them in their future.

“Well done to all the teachers involved, especially Mrs Taylor for organising such a fantastic week.

“Great school amazing children.”

All the children dressed up to reflect the occupation they aspire to, which included teachers, pilots, doctors, marine biologists, architects, an entomologist and a quite a few aspiring footballers.

They also took part in ‘Guess the Profession’, where a variety of people from different jobs were asked a series of questions to establish what they did.

There was a range of visitors including a solicitor, nurse, radiographer, a managing director, an engineer, a veterinary care assistant, a receptionist, a civil servant and even a candle maker!

Engineer Dean Greenwood said: “It was a pleasure to take part in the event.

“The children were a credit to their school.

“The well thought-out questions, politely asked, helped them to identify and the diverse range of professions.”

Mrs Taylor, said: “A further focus of the week was to introduce the children to enterprise by developing their personal and business skills.

“The children got involved in business planning, marketing, financial literacy and creating their own product.

“Then at the end of the week the children got to demonstrate their amazing selling skills as parents were invited to a market place where they got to purchase the goods, including local produce from our wonderful Hesketh Bank farms.”

Headteacher Tony Currie said: “It was an action-packed week designed to raise aspirations and provide the opportunity of experiencing different careers available to our children, who thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We would like to thank Southport College, GBA Logistics and all the business who volunteered their time, and to J&S Pope, Fylde View Farm, ABS Quality Salads and Arden Lea Nurseries who donated the fruit, veg and plants, who made it all possible.”
