Don’t forget elderly, Boris

-

DEAR Prime Minister

Congratulations, you won the leadership campaign and now have the keys to the most famous door in the world. Well done!

As you said in your acceptance speech: ‘The work starts now’.

As chair of the North and South Sefton Care Home Group on Merseyside, I write to respectfully remind you not to forget your social care pledges you made during your leadership campaign.

I was delighted you recognised that people should not be forced to sell their own homes to fund their dementia care.

I do hope this was a genuine desire to improve social care injustice and not just a distraction from BREXIT.

I don’t mean to be cynical, but the past is littered with too many hollow political promises. Our carers, our families our care organisations deserve better.

But above all else, our beautiful, vulnerable elderly deserve the best.

As you start to build your new cabinet, I would humbly ask that you place social care higher up your ‘things to do’ list.

Somewhere in between, ‘Sort BREXIT out’ and ‘Better give Jeremy a good job’.

So, on behalf of our membership I would ask that:

1. The Social Care Green Paper is published without further delay.

2. Social Care is given a higher level of importance within your new cabinet.

3. Additional resources are allocated to local authorities to appropriately deliver Social Care.

4. Social Care is elevated and recognised as an important career in society.

Finally, I hope you enjoy your new home.

You clearly have your work cut out for the next few months.

Should you ever be in Southport I would be delighted to show you some examples of excellent care for the elderly and those with dementia.

I will even take you for an ice-cream on a rickshaw on our amazing Victorian pier.

PS. May I suggest you don’t put a zipwire up in your back garden. Most respectfully,

Jonathan Cunningham MBE

INDEBTED TO GLOVERS

IT is almost 20 years since the late Tom Glover, ably assisted by his wife Jackie, initiated his attempt to improve the neglected Hesketh Park.

With the help of many volunteers it is now much improved.

The important part played by the Glovers in this should not be forgotten. Naming the Rose Garden after them would, I think, be appropriate. Geoff Fenwick Southport

BUSY, NOISY SKIES

I AM happy to see the sun shining again and looking forward to enjoying a bit of relaxation in the garden, however this is not possible due to the persistent drone of light aircraft that buzz around the sky over Southport every day.

Is it just me or do other people find the noise so irritating?

Looking at the plane radar app it appears the planes are all registered to Babcock International. Ian Gudgion via email
