AN ELDERLY woman whose body was found in the back garden of a Southport house died of natural causes, a post mortem examination has found.
Police were called to the house in Kenilworth
Road, Ainsdale, in the evening of Monday, July 29 to what they described as a “concern for safety” of an 88-year-old woman.
Officers searched the property and found her body in the garden.
Merseyside police treated the death as “unexplained” and a 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder before being released under investigation and detained under the Mental Health Act.
A Home Office post mortem examination carried out last Thursday revealed that the death was the result of natural causes.
The man remains detained under the Mental Health Act.
The woman is still to be formally identified but next of kin have been informed and a file will be given to the coroner for investigation.
After the discovery, which brought a large police response, neighbours expressed shock.
Patt Kelly said: “An elderly gentleman used to live there with his wife until he died a few years back but I remember him saying to me our son’s come back to live with us.
“He continued to live there with his mum. It’s shocking to think you’re never going to see her again. I used to speak to her at the bus stop, she was a lovely lady.
“She was quite fit for someone of that age, she was always in the garden pottering and the son would always be chopping down stuff out there.”
