SOUTHPORT’S award-winning Brass Pig Smokehouse will celebrate five years of creating weird and wonderful burgers tomorrow.

The bar and grill plans to celebrate with its customers by serving 100% fillet steak burgers for the first 50 burgers at the same regular price and the first 100 people will get a free cupcake.

Owner Eddy Weights, 39, said: “It’s hard because with bars, it’s quite easy to celebrate a birthday but with a smokehouse it’s a bit more difficult so we’ve decided to celebrate it the way we know how – with great burgers.

“Fillet steaks are expensive, so we thought we’d give them to our customers for our usual price.”

Brass Pig, in Bath Street, opened in 2014 and made headlines within a few months of its opening with its Sunday Beast burger – which is

basically a Sunday roast in burger.

It hit the headlines later that year with its pig in blanket Christmas hot dog and then took the idea further with the Christmas Beast – a Christmas dinner in a burger.

In 2015 it won Southport’s best sandwich at the Southport Ambassador Awards and in 2016 Eddy won One to Watch for Chef of the Year.

Much of their meat is prepared over 24 hours with smokers on site.

It also holds food challenges and serves beer and cocktails.

Eddy said: “It’s great how much we’ve grown over the five years.

“When we started, we had only eight items on the menu, no starters or desserts.

“Now we have a seven-page menu and two full pages of burgers including veggie burgers – as vegetarians deserve great burgers too.

“In the beginning, we were the only place doing pulled pork and brisket which has become really popular now. We make our own sauces and mayo too.

“Even just in terms of the interior. There’s pictures from when we first started and it was pretty basic with just ten tables and chairs but now it’s like a shrine to Marvel!

“We have life-size cardboard cutouts, which of course, the kids love to take pics with.”

Eddy decided to start creating weird and wonderful burgers quite early on in the business.

He said:“We saw how successful our burger ideas were becoming so we thought we’d give the customers more.

“We noticed that people had started to copy us too so we decided to go all out and that’s how our Sunday Beast was created and was a big hit.

“We’ve had people travel from other countries to come and try our burgers.”

Eddy has hopes to expand the business too.

He said: “We’d love to get some investment and expand to other sites, possibly in Lytham, Ormskirk or Waterloo.”
