THE residents of a Southport care home enjoyed an afternoon with a difference as they joined the book craze sweeping Southport.

Those staying at Hollies Rest Home took to the streets to hide books around the Mornington Road area, ready to be found and claimed by new owners.

The Look for a Book craze only started this summer, but has quickly spread around the country after becoming popular on social media.

Books are wrapped or covered to prevent damage from rain and the challenge isn’t limited to kids’ books, with adults encouraged to join in as well.

It has become a big hit in Southport, with more than 3,700 members now in a dedicated Facebook group where treasure hunters post pictures of the books they have hidden or found

Each book is hidden with a note telling the finder they can take it away to read or pass on to someone else. They are asked to then re-hide when finished, or keep it and hide another book for

the next person to find.

After a suggestion from care worker Michelle Smith, residents at Hollies first took part by hiding books near their home, before repeating the trick at the Southport Flower Show.

Helen Eslick, owner and manager of the home, said: “We thought that it would be great for our residents to get involved in such a fabulous idea. Lots of our residents are keen readers and the four men pictured love reading so they were really happy to be involved in such a fun book hunt.

“They were delighted when staff asked if they would like to join in. They all got ready with excitement and couldn’t wait to go outside and start hiding the books – it was a great adventure for them. They met people whilst outside, it was such a great afternoon.”

“I was so happy to see them getting involved in the community.”
