Tory hopeful aims to cut town parking charges

-

A LAWYER hoping to gain a seat on Sefton Council says that if elected he will campaign to reduce parking charges in Southport.

Michael Prendergast has been selected by Southport Conservatives to stand for Dukes Ward, which covers parts of Southport town centre and Birkdale, in the local elections in May 2020.

The solicitor lives in Birkdale with his wife and two children.

He has experience of running his own business and has been a keen charity supporter over the years, running the London Marathon on two occasions and the Great North Run.

Michael said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to hopefully represent my home town.

“I want to help residents with the issues that matter to them and give them a greater voice in the council.

“I will work hard to win over as many people as possible and would encourage those who don’t normally vote to do so at the local elections.”

He said his main priorities for Dukes

Ward and Southport in general will include:

To push Sefton Council to improve the condition of many of the roads and pavements throughout the ward, including potholes being filled in, improved litter collecting and the removal of weeds from many of our pavements and gutters.

To reduce car parking charges in order to encourage more visitors and increase commerce in the town centre.

To speak up for Southport and ensure a fair distribution of funds from Sefton Council.

Current Dukes Ward Conservative councillor Sir Ron Watson said: “I am very pleased that I have now been given the opportunity to work with Mike Prendergast on Dukes Ward issues in particular and I am sure he will make an excellent Sefton councillor if elected.

“Mike has shown a quick grasp of the essential issues in our area and I haven’t the slightest doubt that he will be able to make a very positive contribution in a whole variety of areas where his expertise, enthusiasm and encouragement of the voluntary sector will enhance the position of many people in the ward.”
