Southport Visiter

Words captured our quality

-

RECENTLY, a book titled Hollywood Legends in Southport, written by James Ford, was brought to my attention.

I found his reading fascinating and well written by a certainly erudite, passionate and intelligent local author.

Not only that, it made me rediscover what, two decades ago ago now, attracted me to Southport – and to which I think it is useful to look to rediscover and relaunch our town.

Its beautiful architecture unique in the area, the visibility of life walking through its streets and shops, its compactness, the fine balance of large and small streets, without too many tall buildings – which should be avoided unless they are really worth the additional airspace, as has instead sadly happened on some sites along

Lord Street; a sense of the local in terms of cultural and geographical qualities.

It is not surprise that Hollywood stars enjoyed their visit to Southport and I hope Sefton Council could find inspiration reading the book.

SUPERB DEDICATION

WE are very fortunate in having a dedicated group of people who have made Southport Flower Show a premier national attraction, and its gone from strength to strength with a huge range of stalls and exhibitions and exhibits that were so impressive for their imagination and quality.

Once again the show was able to attract a major figure from the entertainment world to open the show and I very much enjoyed having lunch with him and hearing about his very hectic lifestyle commuting between the UK and Los Angeles on a weekly basis for months on end.

The co-operation between all the sectors in the town is a wonderful example of what can be achieved. Sir Ron Watson Dukes Ward Councillor

GOOD LUCK BORIS

JUST listen to the outrage from our “Remainer” parliamentarians at being out-trumped by Boris.

They all claim that he is behaving undemocratically.

But what do these people know – or care – about democracy?

The truest form of democracy is a people’s referendum.

We had one of those over three years ago and our people voted to leave the European Union.

These so called “Remainers” have been on the anti-democratic route ever since then in their fight to overturn democracy and keep us in the EU.

Had the result of the referendum been in their favour, you can bet your life that they would have been claiming we must abide by the result.

They have continually blocked all attempts to agree an exit deal even though the deal in question was a fudge contrived by “Remainer” Theresa May with the intention of keeping us bound to the EU for ever.

I have never been a fan of Boris but he has certainly done more than his predecessor to ensure that the result of the 2016 people’s referendum vote should be upheld.

Democracy means implementing the will of the people.

If Boris achieves that he will certainly have earned my respect and probably the respect of the majority of our people. Good luck to him. Terry Durrance UKIP
