Hats off to college grads!
SOUTHPORT College’s higher education department marked another successful year with its annual graduation ceremony.
Graduates from 17 subjects, ranging from BA (hons) criminology & social science to PGCE teacher training, came together to celebrate their achievements in the impressive surroundings of Holy Trinity Church, Southport.
College principal John Clarke handed out the certificates and congratulating each student.
He was joined on the platform by the department’s academic staff, as well as vice principal Anne-Marie Francis and chair of governors Ronnie Fell.
Student speaker Janine Bannister, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in working with children & families, gave an inspiring speech about her time at the college.
She described the hard work and determination she and her fellow classmates showed in achieving their qualifications.
She also thanked course tutors for their continued support and library staff who made a great impact when she was completing her dissertation.
The keynote speaker was Helena Knapton, the senior teaching and learning fellow for the faculty of education
and PGCE business education course leader at Edge Hill University.
She congratulated the students for their consistent hard work and urged them to take their next steps in pursuit of their goals.
Awards for outstanding students were also presented during the ceremony on Wednesday, August 28.
The award for Outstanding Achievement went to BA criminology and social science graduate Hayley Cantwell who achieved 95% in her dissertation and a first class honours overall.
Joel Fletcher, who studied HND graphics, gained the Citizenship award for his collaborative work within the college; and the award for Student Engagement went to Lukas Allsworth, an HNC engineering graduate, for his continued support in promoting the college within the local area.
The higher education department at southport college offers a wide range of degree and HND courses and appeals to a plethora of students, many of whom are returning to education as the start of their journey to pursue a whole new career path.
The degrees are awarded by either the University of Cumbria or UCLan.
