Hats off to college grads!

SOUTHPORT College’s higher education department marked another successful year with its annual graduation ceremony.

Graduates from 17 subjects, ranging from BA (hons) criminolog­y & social science to PGCE teacher training, came together to celebrate their achievemen­ts in the impressive surroundin­gs of Holy Trinity Church, Southport.

College principal John Clarke handed out the certificat­es and congratula­ting each student.

He was joined on the platform by the department’s academic staff, as well as vice principal Anne-Marie Francis and chair of governors Ronnie Fell.

Student speaker Janine Bannister, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in working with children & families, gave an inspiring speech about her time at the college.

She described the hard work and determinat­ion she and her fellow classmates showed in achieving their qualificat­ions.

She also thanked course tutors for their continued support and library staff who made a great impact when she was completing her dissertati­on.

The keynote speaker was Helena Knapton, the senior teaching and learning fellow for the faculty of education

and PGCE business education course leader at Edge Hill University.

She congratula­ted the students for their consistent hard work and urged them to take their next steps in pursuit of their goals.

Awards for outstandin­g students were also presented during the ceremony on Wednesday, August 28.

The award for Outstandin­g Achievemen­t went to BA criminolog­y and social science graduate Hayley Cantwell who achieved 95% in her dissertati­on and a first class honours overall.

Joel Fletcher, who studied HND graphics, gained the Citizenshi­p award for his collaborat­ive work within the college; and the award for Student Engagement went to Lukas Allsworth, an HNC engineerin­g graduate, for his continued support in promoting the college within the local area.

The higher education department at southport college offers a wide range of degree and HND courses and appeals to a plethora of students, many of whom are returning to education as the start of their journey to pursue a whole new career path.

The degrees are awarded by either the University of Cumbria or UCLan.
