THE popular Birkdale Curry House on Liverpool Road is set to close this Sundaybefore re-opening under new management.

The restaurant first opened in 1998, almost 22 years ago, with Liverpool FC legend Kenny Dalglish a regular customer.

Owners Nargis Rahman, 45, who is manager, and Muhit Aziz Rahman, 50, head chef, are off to travel the world and spend more time with family.

Their son is in Sweden finishing his master’s degree and their daughter finishing her bachelor’s degree in London.

Nargis said: “We are very sad to say goodbye to our lovely customers and thank them for their support over the years.

“Thank you to the brilliant staff we’ve had for their hard work and we’d also like to thank Kenny Dalglish for letting us use his name. We’re very sad

to close off the menu with the Kenny Dalglish Special.

“We were in our early 20s when we started this business. My son was only one and my daughter was five. Such a long time and we’re sad to leave it behind.”

Customers were quick to add their praise and thanks to the announcement on Facebook.

Peter Cook said: “Noooo!!! We had a fantastic meal tonight. Consistently brilliant. Best curry house in the area. Thanks so much for supplying such amazing food and good luck for the future.”

Mark Jones wrote: “The best Indian food in town. Gutted you’re going. But good luck in your new venture.”

Former employee Philip Taylor said: “Didn’t see that coming. Hope everything works out well for you all.

“Can’t believe it’s been 22 years since you took me from Ormskirk to work at Southport with you. Thank you for helping me create the Phil Special.”

Although sad, it’s also been the couple’s ambition to travel the world.

Nargis said: “We’re looking forward to seeing the world and exploring. We’re starting in Europe and then moving through the Middle East then the Far East and hopefully America.

“We’re just looking forward to taking a break for a few years and having weekends again as the restaurant was always incredibly busy.

“We’re leaving our Facebook page open so people can see what we get up to.”

The property will still be theirs but will be under new management and not trading as the company Curry House Indian Takeaway.

Nargis said: “We do have plans to come back to Southport and reopen in a few years and see our lovely customers again and bring back some new recipes we’ve discovered.”
