The poor will suffer most from Brexit
TERRY Durrance (“Good luck Boris” September 5) claims that in the European referendum our people voted to leave the European Union.
They categorically did not, as 61.5% of voters did not vote to leave, although slightly more actually voted to leave than to stay.
Theresa May, with a more recent mandate than the referendum (through her 2017 election), put a compromise deal to the Commons and the hard right rejected it three times.
Theresa May’s soft-Brexit deal, while distasteful to pro-Europeans nevertheless attempted to respect the views of remainers, as Dominic Raab, the Brexit Secretary said at the time.
Many of us who are concerned that the continuing collapse of our currency demonstrates that the rest of the world views hard Brexit as a bad deal and will lead to the financial equivalent of nuclear winter which the poorest elements of our society – as always – will carry.
So the Brexiteers have had their chance and the whole issue alongside other constitutional reform should be put to a high level convention while the UK Parliament recommences its usual business. Dr Jim Ford Southport
