Zetland’s surge late on for win

IN Division One of the Southport and Formby

Quiz League, the first match of the season between two of the heavyweigh­ts saw Zetland defeat Formby Sports

46-31.

The match was fairly close for seven rounds but Zetland won the last 9-2 to pull away.

John Clarke 15, Mark Halton 14 and Harry Owen 12 scored well for the home side with Sheila Tickle 13 leading for Sports.

The first draw occurred also this week with Metros and Mixed Blues finishing 33-33 after a fluctuatin­g contest. Dave Leyland 15 and Bob Rimmer 10 led for Metros and Bill Morris 14 for the visitors. Heavy scoring from Bill Thomas 18, Dave Dutton 14, Ray Oakes 12 and Chris Sumner 11 led Casablanca to a comfortabl­e 55-38 victory over E Street Band with Dave Nickeas 14 and Alan Wright 10 leading the reply.

Fishermen’s Rest led for a few rounds at Wings before the home side finished strongly to win 54-32 with Keith Mulhearn 16, Dag Griffiths 15 and Tom Farley 14 all making useful contributi­ons.

In Division Two, Dismounted trailed Southport FC by only 4 at the halfway mark but the visitors won the second half 31-7 to achieve a very comfortabl­e 51-23 victory led by David Philips 24 and Geoff Wilde 21.

Led by Ann Evans 17 and Chris Hodgen 12, MPs led throughout to win in their match with Quads 44-22. Vikings continued their good start to the season with a 36-29 victory over ExPats led by Alan Martin 15 and Kate Woods 11 with Kath Jackson 11 leading for the visitors. Good scoring from Margaret Coppleston­e and Ged Gallagher, both 12 and Nick Aindow 10 led Formby Pavilion to a comfortabl­e 43-22 victory over St Jeromes led by Paul Otterson 12.

In the Merseyside Quiz League 60th anniversar­y Pairs Competitio­n held in Hoylake, three players from our league entered the competitio­n; Dag Griffiths, Tom Farley and Bob Parry ( all Wings ) with Tom and Dag reaching the final and Tom finishing in third place.
