Cables fail to stretch in comfortable win
SOUTHPORT began their defence of the Liverpool CFA Senior Cup with a comfortable win at home to Prescot Cables on Tuesday.
The game saw a re-run of last year’s final, but whereas the Port needed penalties to lift the trophy in April, this was a more rudimentary win for Liam Watson’s side.
Zehn Mohammed’s first-half goal was added to by Devarn Green and Andy Parry, as Southport booked their place in the second round, where they will travel to Burscough.
It was an open start to the game with chances at both ends. Lloyd Dean and George Hassall both had early chances for Prescot while Devarn Greene as denied by visiting goalkeeper Oliver Taylor, who also kept out George Newell’s firm drive.
As the half went on, the Port began to take control, as header from Ryan Astles was stopped on the goal-line by Valter Fernandes, before Newell released Green, who brought aother save from keeper Taylor.
The Port went ahead shortly before half-time, Mohammed scoring his third goal in four games by drilling the ball home after a throw-in from Reagan Ogle was flicked on by Astles.
The home team turned the screw after half-time, Newell bringing the ball down in the area and sending a shot wide before two quick goals set the seal on the tie.
Green dispossessed defender Reece McNally, took the ball into the area and found the bottom corner, before substitute Andy Parry added a third, stabbing the ball home after a corner from Connor Woods was won by Mohammed.
The home team saw the game out comfortably and Newell could have extended the winning margin as Watson’s side eased through.
