Southport Visiter

The Chesh is on the right lines with its Oktoberfest weekend

-

ON AN impulse, I decided to pop into the Cheshire Lines in King Street, Southport, last weekend and was greeted warmly with the news of their forthcoming beer festival, writes Neville Grundy.

The Chesh, as it’s generally known, is a good real ale pub with four handpumps regularly in use, and the beers I tried on this visit were in good condition.

On Saturday and Sunday October 5-6 they’ll be putting on the Chesh Oktoberfest promising “Steins and Good Times” with 30 different casks, so there will be plenty of scope for sampling various beers.

This two-day event will also feature live music from six bands, an outdoor bar, a DJ, a barbecue and various giveaways – all a mere two minutes’ walk from Lord Street.

The Chesh is also popular for its food, for which it gets good reviews on TripAdvisor, so you will be well-served if you get peckish after a few pints.

Entry is free; not one to be missed. Call 01704 546565 for more details.

BEER GUIDE NEWS

THE local brewing and pub scene in Merseyside and Cheshire is booming, according to Camra’s Good Beer Guide 2020, which features the best pubs to find a great pint in the UK.

It reports that there are three new breweries in the region: Tom’s Tap, Crewe.

Liverpool Brewing, Liverpool. Team Toxic, Birkenhead. In addition, the Cricketers Arms in St Helens has once again been named one of the best pubs in the UK, making its way to the next stage of the competition in the nationwide search for Camra’s Pub of the Year.

Having won the top prize in 2017, the Cricketers is a popular destination on the St Helens pub scene.

A friendly, family-run community pub, it boasts 13 changing real ales, 10 ciders and over 100 gins.

This traditional pub has just undergone a refurbishment with two beer gardens and an outside bar for regular beer festivals, private events, darts and pool leagues, quiz nights and regular fundraising events for local charities.

An on-site micro-brewery started brewing last month.

It will now compete in the next round of the competition, hoping to be named one of four finalists; the overall winner will be announced next February.
