Sandground­ers may go back to part-time Training ground issue is catalyst for move

SOUTHPORT are considerin­g reverting to part-time status. Several members of the Sandground­ers squad are currently tied to full-time contracts but the club have been unable to train during the daytime due to a mutual split from their training ground provider at Skelmersda­le.

With Southport just four points outside the play-offs after their opening 12 matches, majority shareholde­r Ian Kyle admits he and manager Liam Watson will assess all their options while training of an evening.

“Nothing will change in relation to players contracts,” Kyle said. “Players will stay as they are. We’re moving forward with the players and we’re already in negotiatio­ns with some of the players in regards to next season.

“There’s no alteration to their contract and no mass exodus of players because we’re not training on a full-time basis. We’ll be as we were and try and do as many hours in the evening as we have been doing during the week.

“There’s been no concerns from the players and nobody is up in arms. It gives us a lot more flexibilit­y to sit back and decide where we want to be of a training perspectiv­e.

“I’ve seen and read a lot of opinions on whether we should be full-time, whether we should be part-time, but this gives us the opportunit­y to sit-back and evaluate where we want to be and how we want to do it.”

Southport overcome Farsley Celtic in the FA Cup third qualifying round on Saturday to set up a fourth qualifying round clash with Altrincham.
