THE SKIES above Southport will glow with bonfires and fireworks this weekend with a number of events.

Southport Pleasureland is staging a Day of the Dead Festival this Saturday (November 2)

Themed on the traditional Mexican “Día de los Muertos”, the event promises an explosion of family-friendly colour and high spirits.

It is taking its inspiration from the towns and cities throughout Mexico, where revellers go all-out with skull-themed makeup and hit the dressing-up box for weird and wonderful costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and drum up irresistible dance beats.

Tickets are available from: southportpleasureland.com.

The grand setting of Meols hall in Churchtown will host the Southport Hesketh Round Table Grand Bonfire and Fireworks display on Saturday, with record numbers of tickets sold online.

Gates open at 5pm with a bonfire lit at 6.30pm and fireworks from 8pm.

There will be a fairground, children’s entertainers, hog roast and plenty of refreshments.

Southport Hesketh Round Table president Dean Wilson said: “We suspected it would do well but it is really nice to see the community excited.”

This event has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local charities over the years.

People can pay at the gates on the night but there is a discounted rate for advance online sales.

Family tickets are £15, which also gets you a parking space. Single ticket prices are: adults £6, under-11s £2.50 and under-fives go free.

For tickets find the Southport Hesketh Round Table - Charity Bonfire and Fireworks - Meols Hall page in the Ticket Source website.

The annual free Lakeside bonfire and fireworks display also takes place on Saturday.

Along with a hog roast by Graham Eyes, a sweet station and toasted marshmallows, there will be other refreshments – and donkey rides.

Organiser Simon Rigby said: “This is our third bonfire and fireworks display and we’re really excited to be providing this free fun family event for the community.”

It runs between 5pm and 7pm at Lakeside Church, Fairway, Southport.
