Whatever ails you, try this latest venture to find the perfect Remedy

-

IT’S ALWAYS fantastic to see a top class local independent business do well. And Remedy has proved so popular among local residents and visitors that owners Susannah Porter and Sarah Simcock have already opened a second venue.

In the days when chain coffee shops and stores dominate our high streets, it’s local businesses – owned by local people, who reinvest their earnings back into their local communities – that really do deserve our support.

And when they get it right like Remedy does, then it’s very easy to lend support.

My family and I became huge fans of the original Remedy when it first opened inside the former Southport Tourist Information Centre in Lord Street four years ago (it has since moved across the Town Hall Gardens into the slightly larger, former Marine Gardens Cafe site).

It forged a winning combination. Run by real food lovers, there was some great choice on the menu for all ages, plus great coffees during the day and of course the famous selection of gins and whiskies as the day became dusk. The cakes are worth a visit on their own too.

We were delighted to see Remedy open a second venue, in Botanic Road in the beautiful setting of Churchtown Village.

Lord Street, Churchtown – they certainly love their classic locations.

The breakfasts are amazing – and the good news is they serve their breakfast menu until 4pm each day.

They always use great quality ingredients: great sausages, tasty bacon – so they’re big on flavour.

The much-loved Remedy English breakfast (£9) includes buttered toast, two rashers of bacon, sausage, poached egg, black pudding, mushrooms, hash brown and baked beans.

What a brilliant start to the day.

You could always opt for the slimline breakfast (£6.50), of fat free bacon, two poached eggs, tomato and baked beans, which is a good idea for those wanting to enjoy a healthier version of the best meal of the day.

They also offer a vegan/veggie breakfast (£6.50), with choices such as eggs Benedict (two poached eggs, muffin, bacon, spinach, home-made hollandaise, (£7.50), eggs avocado (smashed avocado, chilli, lime, coriander, spring onion) and tomatoes with poached egg (£7), or American pancakes with fresh berries, yoghurt and honey (£6) or crispy bacon, blueberries and maple syrup (£7.50).

We’ve enjoyed breakfast there a few times, and have never failed to be impressed.

We went back again this week for lunch.

With my wife and daughters enjoying their half-term, we wondered into the village to find a bustling venue.

Remedy’s owners say they are “passionate

about good quality food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere that offers an escape for the daily stresses of life and a comfortable place to meet your friends, watch the world go by, host a meeting, write a report or to read a book”.

They’ve definitely succeeded. It’s a very relaxed place for people of all ages. It’s a very cosy room, and definitely family-friendly. There are lots of games on the sides for children to pick up and enjoy. My daughters (aged three and eight) loved it.

They also offer free Wi-Fi, newspapers and great music, so you can sit back and relax.

Customers are not rushed in here, unlike some other places, which are always rushing customers to try to turn over tables quickly.

My daughters enjoyed a jacket potato with tuna, baked beans on toast and some skinny fries. We got empty plates back from both girls, which is always a good sign from two occasionally fussy eaters!

My wife opted for the halloumi and chorizo on toast, with tomato chutney and red onion (£7.50), which was well cooked with a great combination of flavours.

A couple of years ago, Remedy won an award in the Sandwich of The Year category at the Southport Ambassador

Awards (Southport Ammies) for their gourmet hot dogs. So I was intrigued to try one.

Their hot dogs range in price between £6 to £7.50; 100% pork sausage from a premium German butcher served in a fresh brioche roll, they are very generous in size and pack in the flavour.

The options include naked with ketchup, to traditional dog cheese, ketchup, American mustard and fried onions, to chilli dog to American Deli dog (deli meat, mustard, dill pickles, cheese and American mustard) which I tried. I can now see what all the fuss was about. Excellent.

There is quite a large choice on the lunch food menu, such as Welsh rarebit (£6.50), Caesar salad (£7) and Ploughman’s platter (£12) to sandwiches or wraps (£6.50 to £8) or Remedy burgers (£6.50 to £10.50). The specials are ever-changing and always worth trying.

It’s great to see them now offering a Remedy By Night food menu from 5pm until 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, which is a great sharing experience.

Lots of imagination has gone into the menu, which is perfect for grazing on with friends.

There are some great platters, including a Churchtown Deli cheese board (£12) or a Ploughman’s platter (£12), or meals such as chilli con carne (£8.50) or three fish cakes (£8.50).

But there are also lots of English tapas style small dishes, such as pigs in blankets with a honey and mustard dip (£4.50), smoked sausage with pickled vegetables (£5), mini fish and chips with tartare sauce (£6) or mackerel pate with toasted rye bread (£4).

Whatever your reason for visiting, and whoever you are with, you will find a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere with great quality food and a wide choice of drinks and coffees. Not to mention superb home-made cakes.

It’s guaranteed to be the perfect remedy.
