Shock at the top as Wings beaten by Formby

IN Division One of the Southport and Formby Quiz League, with their full strength team out and the right questions, Formby Sports are capable of beating any team in the league and so it proved this week when they defeated Wings to shake up things at the top of the table.

Led by Keith Gowans 18, Sheila Tickle 13 and Bill Hodgson 11, they were behind for much of the match but won the last round 9-5 to clinch a narrow 50-48 victory, with Dag Griffiths 19 and Keith Mulhearn 15 leading for the visitors.

Casablanca drew level with Wings but were made to struggle in winning 42-38 at Exams with the 8-1 scoreline in the second round proving crucial. Ray Oakes 14 and Dave Dutton 11 led for the visitors and Steve James 14 and Nick Philpott 10 for Exams.

Zetland remain in touch after their 52-41 victory over Metros with good scoring from Harry Owen 15, Mark Halton 14, John Clarke 13 and Paul Edwards 10 with Dave Leyland 15 and

Steve Wilson 10 leading the reply. Winning the sixth round 9-1 proved crucial for Fishermen’s Rest in their 45-36 victory at Mixed Blues scoring from John Ashcroft 15, Steve Murphy 11 and Dave Tarr 10 with Jim McGrath 13 and Bill Morris 10 leading for the home side.

The Division Two key match this week was the very close encounter in which Formby Pavilion won the last round by two to edge out Vikings 39-38 led by good scoring from Ged Gallagher and Leon Metford, both 11, with Alan Martin and Kate Woods, both 13, leading for the home side.

Led by Jack Gardner 20 and Derek Roberts 14, Shifting Sands proved too strong for

MPs in winning 45-30 with Ann Evans 14 leading for the visitors. Dismounted’s season continues to pick up with their 39-34 victory at ExPats led by Steve Watson 14 and Frank Hansen 12 with Don Hobson 10 leading for the home side.

St Jeromes came close to winning their first match of the season leading by a point going into the last round against Southport FC but the football team won the last by two to finish 35-34 ahead led by Mick Hopkins 11 with Paul Otterson 13 and John Hoyle 10 leading for the Formby side.

In the President’s Trophy, our league side got their season off to a good start with victories over the Liverpool and Wirral League teams.

Our league was represente­d by the regular quartet of Dag Griffiths and Tom Farley (both Wings), Harry Owen (Zetland) and Dave Dutton (Casablanca).
