It’s my job to get us moving forward insists McNally

PAUL McNally is determined to stop the rot as he looks to add attacking reinforcements at Skelmersdale United.

United have lost eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions following last Friday’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Avro and find themselves just four points above the NWCFL Premier Division drop-zone after relegation from the BetVictor North West Division last term.

McNally handed a debut to new signing Emini Adegbenro at Avro but asserted further incomings will arrive in the near future following a difficult start to the season.

“We’ve gone a little bit backwards, which is sad, but it’s up to me to sort out and I will by just working hard and getting the right personnel in,” the former Litherland REMYCA manager said.

“Strikers are gold-dust. They get paid big and they’re moving round, these strikers, because they’re worth their weight in gold and if I can get one, maybe two, we’ll be better.

“But Skelmersdale, even in this league, are not competing financially with other teams. We’ve had a lot of tough fixtures and played seven or eight of the top 10 so when you look at it like that it’s heavy.

“But there’s games we should have won, I’ll make no bones about it.”

United have also appealed to the local community to help raise funds for the club this winter.

“With eight weeks until Christmas, more people will start buying gifts, picking up decorations and ordering festive food,” a statement read.

“Make sure Skelmersdale United does not miss out on a single donation.

“You can raise FREE donations for Skelmersdale United every time you shop online!

“4,000 shops and sites will donate when you use EasyFundraising, so you can support us when you’re doing your everyday shopping, your Christmas shopping, or buying anything else!

“Register with EasyFundraising and when you shop online choose the cause ‘Skelmersdale United’ and raise donations for the club. Every little helps.”

Nick Matthews hopes Burscough’s 6-0 hammering at Winsford United on Saturday is a ‘blip’ in their battle to push away from the relegation zone.

Burscough are now winless in 14 games in all competitions and have not tasted victory in the Premier Division since August.

There was hope that after draws with Congleton Town and Southport - Linnets took the National League North high-fliers all the way to penalties in the Liverpool Senior Cup quarter-finals - Matthews’ side had turned a corner but Winsford offered a swift reality check.

“I’m very disappointed,” Matthews said after the defeat.

“We put in two good performances in the previous two games, 1-1 away at Congleton, a game in which we played with 10-men for 40 minutes and then the 2-2 draw with Southport in the Liverpool Senior Cup.

“I thought we had put the bad away-day performances to bed. But today was if honest one of the worst defensive performances collectively as a team I have witnessed. Individual errors cost us the first three goals, all three could have easily been avoided.

“We had two great chances at 1-0 down and in truth should have been 1-2 up, but fail to capitalise and within minutes we are 0-2 and then quickly 0-3.

“I am hoping it’s just a blip as the lads have worked hard and the group of strangers we had was starting to look like a team.

“We start again on Tuesday [in training] and hopefully, we will put it right at home to Barnoldswick Town [this weekend].”

Despite the poor start to the season, it is understood Matthews’ job remains secure with a senior club official commending the recent draw at Southport and stating Burscough are heading in the right direction both on and off the field.
