Wings hit the heights

THE key match in Division One of the Southport and Formby Quiz League was between the joint leaders Wings and Casablanca.

Wings producing a strong team performanc­e to come out 52-34 winners with all players, Dag Griffiths 16, Keith Mulhearn and Tom Farley, both 13, and Maurice Wright 10 contributi­ng well and Bill Thomas 14 leading for the visitors.

Zetland kept in touch with a similar performanc­e, winning 50-31 at E Street Band with John Clarke 17, Derek Ainsworth 12, Mark Halton 11 and Harry Owen 10 all scoring well and Alan Wright 15 leading the reply. Good scoring from Dermot Williams 17 and Chris Wood 10 brought Exams a welcome two points from their 45-39 victory at Mixed Blues with Jim McGrath 14, Bill Morris 11 and Ed Davies 10 leading for the home side. Metros led from the start at Fishermen’s Rest in winning comfortabl­y 52-35 led by a fine 19 from John Richards, well backed by Brian Cummins 15 and Dave Leyland 12 with Steve Murphy 14 and Dave Tarr 10 leading foe the Fish.

In Division Two, all three leading teams won again, MPs winning a double header, to make things very tight at the top. Vikings lead on 18 points with Formby Pavilion and MPs a point behind.

Vikings led throughout at Quads and finished 39-29 ahead led by Roy Shannon 15 and Kate Woods 10 with Richard Farbon 10 leading for the home side. Led by Margaret Coppleston­e 14 and Ann Metford 13, Formby Pavilion produced a solid performanc­e at Southport FC to finish 43-34 ahead with Geoff Wilde 13 and Paul Hill 11 leading for the football club.

Led by Ann Evans 18, MPs edged home 33-30 in their first match at Dismounted, with Mike Williams 17 leading the reply but won the other more comfortabl­y 43-26 with Dan Evans registerin­g a fine 19, backed by his mother Ann 17.
