THE organisers of the award-winning Mad Dog 10k race were “devastated” as Storm Ciara caused the cancellation of last weekend’s event.

Some 3,500 runners were set to take part in the annual event, only for the rain and wind to become too extreme as the storm battered the area.

Although Southport wasn’t as badly hit as other nearby towns – fallen trees blocked multiple streets in Ormskirk and roads were flooded with deep water across Lancashire – conditions at the race’s coastal location were deemed to be too unsafe.

In a statement released on behalf of organisers Southport Hesketh Round Table, Adrian

Shandley said that the amber weather warning meant that the event would no longer be insured if it had gone ahead.

He said: “It has been a difficult 72 hours, a heart-breaking decision, with lots of time and effort that sadly went nowhere, not to mention the seven months of planning.

“We are volunteers doing this for nothing, trying to put on a quality event for local charities and good causes.

“This was an ‘act of Dog’ and there was nothing we could do.

Having seen the weather over the weekend, I know it was the right decision.

“Thank you to all involved in the setting up and dismantling of the event this weekend – so sad to see it all come to nothing.”

The organisers said that, as

stated in terms and conditions, no refunds would be given but those who paid to take part will be given heavily discounted entry for next year’s event.

The event, which sells out in a matter of hours each year, features prizes for fastest time and best fancy dress as it attracts competitive runners as well as more casual athletes and charity fundraisers.

Next year’s race is scheduled for February, with the theme of Jurassic Bark.
