Yellows boss pragmatic after letting late lead slip

LIAM Watson refused to criticise his players after Southport conceded two goals during injury time to draw at Hereford on Saturday.

George Newell and Jack Sampson had given the Sandgrounders a strong lead heading into additional play but a Kelsey Mooney double ensured ten-man Hereford earned a point.

When asked if he was disappointed by the manner of the result, Watson replied: “Yeah, obviously. To concede two goals in injury time when we’ve played ever so well, but things like that happen.

“We’ve just got to get on a little run. We’re unbeaten in four now and we need to grind out results and see where it takes us.

“I’m not going to stand here and criticise the players because I think they’ve given me everything for 90 minutes and they didn’t deserve it.

“We’re getting back on the bus and I suppose people say with ten men the game changes and they’re putting everything into the box but we just didn’t deal with it.

“In the end we couldn’t hold on but I think in the first-half of the game it should have been over.”

Zehn Mohammed and captain David Morgan both sustained injuries during the draw with Morgan rendered almost completely immobile by the end of the game.

He was forced to remain on the field due to Southport having made their allotted three substitutions and Watson admits he will be assessed this week.

On-loan defender Mohammed, meanwhile, looks set to miss the visit of Spennymoor Town to the Pure Stadium.

“Zehn was completely concussed so there will be a protocol,” Watson said. “Even the earliest he could play would be a week on Saturday.

“Morgs looks like he’s opened his knee a little bit so we’ll have to see where that is and just take an assessment really.”
