We’ll graft to score the goals says Liam

LIAM Watson wants more firepower at Southport following their 2-1 home defeat to Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday.

The Sandgrounders took a firsthalf lead through captain David Morgan but Keith Lowe levelled the scoreline five minutes later.

Ashley Hemmings’ winner with 25 minutes remaining means Southport are now nine points adrift of the play-off places in the National League North and have not tasted victory in five matches.

“We’ve been short of goals all season and that’s abundantly clear,” Watson said afterwards. “That’s why we try and get two forwards on the pitch.

“We’ll keep working hard and keep on making sure we’re doing the right things and try to turn it round and get a bit of luck to try and get a couple of wins.”

Southport were without Jack Dunn for the visit of the Harriers after he was recalled by parent club Warrington Town while Brad Bauress missed the game through illness.

And Watson, who agreed new contracts with Charlie Oliver and striker George Newell earlier this month, believes there is a need for further competition in the final third.

“It’s the profile we’re looking for,” the manager, in his third spell with Southport, said of Oliver and Newell’s extensions.

“23, have had good spells, have come through academies and had good start to careers. Now we think they’re going to find a career.

“I think Charlie Oliver’s ability on the ball is exceptional. George has come in, scored a few goals, looks like a goalscorer and works incredibly hard.

“I think it’s been a tough, tough season for him and [fellow striker Jack Sampson] but on the flipside we also need more competition so people aren’t turning up knowing they’re going to play.

“We need people who are going to push them all the way for their shirts.”
