£4.5m aid to protect homes in town from floods
SOUTHPORT is to receive £4.5 million of funding to improve flood defences and protect more homes from extreme weather.
The cash, which was announced in the Budget last week, is alongside £23 million for Fleetwood and £700,000 for Manchester, and will protect more than 12,500 properties.
Shortly before the funding was announced, Southport MP Damien Moore raised the issue of flooding around Churchtown during a Parliamentary debate.
Welcoming the funding, Mr Moore (right) said: “Last year’s election gave a clear verdict, both nationally and here in Southport. Now the Government has delivered a Budget which delivers on the promises we made to the British people – it is a Budget of a government that gets things done.
“Investment will reach record levels over the next five years, as the Conservatives commit to levelling up across the country – benefitting families and businesses in all corners of the country including here in Southport.
“I am delighted that the Chancellor has announced this much needed funding to protect homes across Southport, and that we have set out other measures to support families and help them with the cost of living, while continuing to invest in Britain’s future responsibly – laying the foundations for a decade of growth and prosperity.
“This is the first Budget delivered outside of the EU for more than five decades. It sets our country on a clear, one-nation Conservative path.”
