Three way fight for the top

- BY TOM FARLEY

WITH one round of matches still to play, three teams can still finish at the top, each having lost one of their eight fixtures and the points difference between them being very marginal.

Conceding three to Southport FC, Fishermen’s Rest were just two points ahead going into the last round but won that 7-2 to finish 38-31 ahead with

Dave Tarr 13 and Steve Murphy 11 leading the scoring.

Receiving 10 at home to Metros, Dismounted saw their advantage disappear at halfway but hung on and won the last round 6-3 to edge it at 42-39 led by Steve Watson 16 and Frank

Hansen 10 with Dave Leyland 19 and John Richards 11 leading for the visitors.

Third of the trio is E Street Band who quickly made up their five point concession to MPs and won fairly comfortably 46-35 with Dave Nickeas 16, Dave Twigge 12 and Alan Wright 11 all scoring well and Ann Evans 19 leading for the visitors.

Led by Harry Owen 20, Mark Halton 14 and Derek Ainsworth 12, Zetland overcame their 17 point concession to Shifting Sands by the end of the seventh round and finished the stronger to finish 50-46 ahead with Jack Gardner 15 leading for Sands.

Casablanca took six rounds to overcome their 21 point concession to Ex Pats and finished comfortably ahead at 58-45 with Ray Oakes 21, Bill Thomas 15 and Dave Dutton 14 all scoring well and Kath Jackson 10 leading for the home side.

Closest match this week was at Formby Sports where the home side made up their 19 point concession to St Jeromes and led by a point with one question left but Paul Otterson answered his own to snatch a 50-49 victory for the visitors despite Sheila Tickle 20 and Gary Buxton and Keith Gowans, both 12, scoring well for Sports.

Wings never really got close to overcoming their 19 point concession to Vikings, despite a late flourish with the visitors winning 58-52 with Kate Woods 12 and Christine Vasey 11 scoring well and Maurice Wright 20 and Keith Mulhern and Dag Griffiths, both 12, for Wings.
