LIVERPOOL FC legend and Birkdale resident Sir Kenny Dalglish was diagnosed with coronavirus while in hospital for a separate complaint.

The former Reds player and manager was admitted to Southport Hospital last week while suffering from gallstones.

In accordance with standard practice, the 69-year-old was tested for Covid-19 and, despite him showing no symptoms, the results came back as positive. Upon his discharge at the weekend, Sir Kenny thanked all those who had offered their support during his stay and urged the public to adhere to social distancing guidelines to protect others.

He said: “I’m delighted to be back home with the family after receiving brilliant care from the NHS, which we appreciate now more than ever. Marina and I would like to express our immense gratitude to the medical staff who cared for me and who continue to treat countless others throughout the country during an incredibly challenging period.

“I know the sun is shining for many of you, but I urge you to stay home and follow the government guidelines to the letter. This is undoubtedly the best way that we can look after one another at this time. We will now be in full lockdown for the recommended amount of time in order to protect the lives of others.”

Sir Kenny said he was admitted to hospital after feeling unwell at home for a few days. He said he is “not one for making a fuss” but knew something wasn’t right so went to hospital to be checked.

He was full of praise for the staff who treated them, who he described as ‘absolutely brilliant’.

Sir Kenny added: “People may think the Dalglish name got me in and got me the best of care. Not so.

“I was looked after because the NHS staff treat everyone the same. They look upon everyone as human beings. Names and backgrounds don’t come into it. That’s the way it should be. The Dalglish family has always had the utmost respect for the NHS and the work they do. Being a patient in a hospital the past couple of days has only reinforced that for us with their knowledge, professionalism and compassion. As a nation, we are all very fortunate to have them and I wish them all well as they work tirelessly to help the country through this pandemic.”
