Helpers sought to staff library and hub
A GROUP dedicated to bringing a library back to Birkdale is recruiting volunteers as it plans to open within months.
Since the councilowned library in Liverpool Road was closed and demolished, volunteers have been working to restart the service.
Five years ago, the group was offered the use of the old station master’s house at Birkdale Railway Station at a peppercorn rent.
Legal formalities were taken care of, funds raised, plans drawn up and eventually the building was brought back up to standard for its new use as Birkdale Community Hub and Library.
Terry Durrance, chairman of the
Trustees of the Station Masters House, said it would open in late September.
He said: “Initially we are looking for volunteers to get the place up and running book management, computer set-up and some small jobs around the building.
“Then we need to develop teams who will manage the day to day operations of the Hub, including room hire. We shall be providing training for the various activities.”
Mr Durrance added: “The trustees decided early in the planning stage that rather than solely providing a library, that we would develop the building into a community hub, incorporating a full library service, but also encompassing a centre for a vast range of community activities serving the whole of Birkdale and further afield.
“When we open, the Hub will offer a comfortable place for internet access, book-borrowing, play for small children, meeting opportunities and much more. There will be full disabled access.”
