Search for car thieves goes on as woman arrested over bike theft
POLICE say they are keeping an open mind over whether a number of incidents of vehicle thefts are connected.
Investigations are continuing after a spate of thefts and attempted thefts over a short period last week.
Incidents included a Volkswagen Tiguan being stolen at about 3am last Wednesday and a van being taken from Crowland Close a day earlier.
The Volkswagen’s owner, Adam Kearsley, said the car was parked on his drive in Pilkington Road and he did not believe the thieves had gone inside his house to take the keys.
“I just don’t know how they got into the car and drove off in it,” he said.
Stewart Lamont said the stolen van belonged to his father-in-law and contained “a sizeable amount of oak flooring” and a full-size pool table.
CCTV recorded at Curzon Road – near Pilkington Road – captured a man and woman attempting to open car doors at about 12.20am on Wednesday.
A police spokesman confirmed that officers were called and arrested a woman in Forest Road.
The 35-year-old from Atherton, Greater Manchester, was arrested on suspicion of theft of a pedal cycle.
Inquiries are ongoing to trace the man involved.
Southport Community Inspector Graham Fisher said: “We’re acutely aware of the concern that these incidents have caused locally.
“One woman is in custody in connection with attempted thefts in the area.”
“We’re determined to find all of those responsible and put them before the courts, so always call 999 if you believe a crime is in progress, and please pass any other information on via our social media desk @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
