Police talk man down from danger building
POLICE negotiators spent five hours talking a man to safety from a partially demolished hospital building.
Fire and ambulances services were also on hand as the man spent much of Tuesday morning inside the former Boothroyd Unit in Curzon Road.
Police were first alerted to the situation at 6.30am when staff from the Hartley Hospital reported that a man had left the facility and about half an hour later he was seen on scaffolding at the construction site.
The building had offered residential and outpatient services for patients with conditions including mental health but was recently replaced by the newly built Hartley Hospital and is in the process of demolition.
Workers responsible for knocking down the building arrived at the site early in the morning, only to be locked out as emergency services dealt with the situation.
Fire crews arrived at 7.20am as part of search and rescue operations and members of North West Ambulance Service’s incident response unit were also deployed.
Shortly after midday, members of the rescue teams were seen putting on climbing gear and half an hour later the man was brought to safety.
A Merseyside police spokesman said that the man was detained under Section 2 of the Mental Health Act.
