Pet owners warned after palm oil found on beach
FRESH warnings have gone out to dog owners as deadly palm oil reappeared along the Sefton coast.
Although harmless to humans, the substance can be poisonous to dogs and large quantities have washed up in recent years from a two-decade-old shipwreck.
Large amounts were cleaned up by Sefton’s coastal team but it occasionally reappears and dog owners are being reminded of the dangers.
A Visiter reader said that they believed they had spotted some of the waxy substance while walking their labrador in Ainsdale last week and added that a neighbour’s dog had become ill after visiting the same area.
A spokesperson for Green Sefton said: “Sefton Council has not received any new reports, however windy conditions can lead to pieces of palm oil being washed up on beaches.
“Palm oil debris is an ongoing problem as so much of it floats around our oceans.
“While palm oil debris is harmless to humans it can be fatal to dogs if eaten.
“For this reason, pet owners are asked to remain vigilant if walking their dog on the coast, especially around tide-lines.
“Warning signs are on display throughout the Sefton Coast and anyone who discovers palm oil is encouraged to call 0151 934 2961 and report it.”
