You can keep you distance and still enjoy a pint in the Bombdie garden

-

THE story of the iconic bombed-out church in Liverpool is wellknown, writes Neville Grundy.

St Luke’s was an Anglican Church reduced by bombing to a shell during the Liverpool Blitz, since which time it has become a monument to Liverpool people who died in WWII and a hub for community activities.

The remaining building is Grade II* listed.

Now a garden bar has been opened in the grounds serving food and drinks, including real ale.

The ales on offer are Liverpool Brewing Company 24 Carat Gold and Liverpool Pale Ale.

The bar has been Covid-19 safety designed and approved.

There are parasols over 30 six-seater tables, so even on a rainy day you can keep dry while you drink.

Service is via a smart phone app and drinks are delivered to your table: there’s no queuing at the bar.

Payment is by card only through the app. They don’t accept cash to ensure safety of both customers and staff.

In addition to the real ales, they will also serve you lager, wines, spirits, bottled beers and ciders, soft drinks and a choice of luxury teas.

And if you feel peckish, Turncoat Pizza are there with a wood-fired pizza oven to offer a wide range of pizzas to suit your tastes.

It’s open Tuesday to Sunday from midday to 8pm, or 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

You’ll find it on Leece Street, about five minutes’ walk from Central Station. For more information, go to: www.bocgardenbar.co.uk. Tel: 0151 374 0366.

Southport & West Lancs Camra was saddened to learn of the death of our former chair Mike Scott on August 7.

Mike was always cheerful and approachable and led the branch with a steady hand in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Under the pseudonym “AL Guzzler”, he also wrote a roguish, sometimes irreverent, and always funny column in our branch magazine, Ale & Hearty.

Our condolences go to his wife Alison and all his family and friends.

Camra Southport & West Lancs regrets the announcement that the New Fleetwood pub in Banks is to be demolished and replaced by a shop.

This leaves the Ralph’s Wife bar as the only place in the village to go for a drink.

The local Camra website is www.southport.camra.org. uk and you can find 37,000 real ale venues at: whatpub. com.
