Tommy sinks 17million-to-1 shot in Texas

-

SOUTHPORT’S Tommy Fleetwood was involved in a 17million-1 shot at the weekend’s WGC Match Play in Texas.

Sergio Garcia hit a holein-one to win a sudden death playoff against Lee

Westwood on Friday to reach the tournament’s knockout rounds and then Fleetwood repeated the feat on Saturday.

Both players were knocked out of the competition at the quarterfinal stage – but had already earned their place in the history books with their achievement.

Like Garcia, Fleetwood’s hole-in-one came at the Austin Country Club’s par-3 third.

“It was a smooth 7, carried onto the slope, and rolled back in,” Fleetwood told the PGA Tour website.

“We couldn’t see it. There were like four people behind and we still weren’t sure. It disappeared and had gone in the hole.

“I think that was backto-back hole-in-ones on that hole because Sergio was the last person to play it last night and then me this morning, so we’re on it good run on that one,” added Fleetwood, who went on to beat Dylan Frittelli in their round of 16 match.

On Friday, Westwood had expressed his shock after Garcia hit a hole-inone to win their playoff against the Briton on the par three third.

“Well, 28 years on tour and I thought I’d seen everything. I hadn’t!” tweeted Westwood.

Garcia said: “A hole-inone is amazing. Lucky No.

We couldn’t see it. There were four people behind it and we still weren’t sure Tommy Fleetwood

13 for me. But the two putts I made on two and three, massive, to keep myself going. And then obviously the shot on four, it’s a great shot, but then you get lucky that first of all it doesn’t hit the flag... and then it rolls back in.”

According to the

National Hole-In-One Registry, the odds of two players in the same fourball making aces on the same hole stands at 17million-1!

Though Fleetwood and Garcia were not playing in a foursome as such, the fact Fleetwood was part of the next pairing on the hole after Garcia makes it a remarkable feat.

Fleetwood lost out in the quarter finals after conceding a two-up lead in his match against Billy Horschel with seven to play, before bogeying the first extra hole.
