Finals get the juices flowing

- BY JIM BOOTH

TABLE Tennis finally emerged last week from the depths of sixteen months of isolation during the Covid Pandemic. Princes St was the venue for the club’s annual competition, be it a year late.

After several exciting qualifying sessions, during the previous couple of weeks, they were left with the best of the best on their own ‘Finals Night’.

The Semi-finals of the

Main Event got things underway with first Michael Stewart beating Dave Britton in three straight, before Colin Turner edged a pulsating five-game encounter against Nick Wilson, to win through by just a smidgen!

Josh Taylor then took on Dave Noden in the ‘Handicap Plate Final’.

No problems for Josh in this one, winning it by 22pts. It was a very similar story in the ‘Handicap Final’ Colin Turner was just too good for Peter

Crichton from the 3rd division. Try as he may, Peter trailed by 19pts at the finish. Maybe that old ‘chestnut’ of questionable handicaps got a very early airing.

It was listed as the 2nd Division Final, but with Gordon Wood and Dave Mullan competing, it was more like a ‘Veterans Final.’

A cagey, tactical battle ensued with Gordon just about getting the better of things, winning it in the fourth game 11-9 .. closer than it looked.

Well, what a great night’s Table Tennis the club had served up, and fittingly it was rounded off by a superb contest in the Main Event Final.

All-out attack from Colin and Michael, assured you were kept on the edge of your seat throughout an enthralling encounter. Colin made it a clean sweep with victory in the end by winning 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 4-11,11-9. Nothing in it at all, just count the points 45-45… Thank you Princes St. for what could be the kickstart for us all in getting TT back up and running for the coming season.

On that very subject, Southport Table Tennis League hopes to commence playing on the 20th September 2021.

It will of course be subject to the continuing ‘Covid’ situation, but fingers crossed we can get there.

Also, with team entries still to be confirmed the league may well have a different look this season, but whatever that is, one thing is certain, it will remain a great sport available to everyone … for more information go to our website: southport. ttleagues.com
