Enjoying grand days

-

WHO remembers enjoying great days out at the old Botanic Gardens Museum in Churchtown?

Or afternoons watching Southport FC winning games at Haig Avenue?

Or the huge crowds that used to watch Southport Carnival pass by?

Today we bring you some great photos from life in Southport in the 1980s and 1990s - including one of Liverpool FC’s greatest ever players pulling pints behind the bar!

Let us know if they bring back any memories for you!

Please get in touch with your old photos and memories from life in Southport in years gone by!

Our first image shows parents from Farnborough Road Infant and Junior Schools in Birkdale launching a SAFE campaign in September 1996, as they asked people to sign a petition at the school gates and gave out leaflets.

The Botanic Gardens Museum in Churchtown in Southport has been a real talking point in recent days.

Sefton Council has announced a plan for new investment in the park, which could see the building brought back to life and attractions such as heritage fairground rides, boats back on the lake, a new cafe and a butterfly house.

This Marshside family enjoys a day out at the Botanic Gardens Museum in October 1984.

Pictured are: Evelyn, Elizabeth and Mike Turner, with grandmother Mrs P. Russell.

Southport did fancy dress in style back in the 1980s!

These hula girls were part of a show at the Mornington Road Centre in September 1981. Were you part of this group?

Who remembers the famous Lugga-Bus? This picture shows passengers waiting next to a Lugga-Bus on London Street in Southport in April 1983, next to a poster showing ‘Manchester to Australia direct - the big hit from Qantas’.

In the background is the former Rumbelows shop on the corner of Chapel Street and London Street, underneath the canopy of Southport Train Station.

Who says Southport doesn’t have Viking heritage?

A Viking parade makes its way down Chapel Street in Southport in July 1983, complete with Viking raiders and a large longboat!

This looks like it could have been one of the iconic Southport Carnival events, with huge crowds thronging the streets.

Chapel Street has since been pedestrianised, but was a three-lane road back in the 1980s.

In the background is Broadbents department store, which later became BHS.

The building is currently being converted into 30 new Prestige Stay aparthotel rooms, with new shops, a new bar and a new cafe.

Boots and Woolworths shops can also be seen.

Liverpool FC Captain Alan Hansen says cheers as he lifts a pint of beer behind the bar of The Bold Hotel on Lord Street in Southport in December 1983.

It clearly brought him luck, because at the end of this season he would go on to lift the Division One League Title, the European Cup and the Milk Cup (the League Cup), while neighbours Everton won the FA Cup at Wembley.

Alan Hansen would then go on to become a respected TV football pundit and has continued to live in Southport.

Who recognises which pub this photo was taken in?

Next we have two pictures of life at Holy Trinity Church, on the corner of Hoghton Street and Manchester Road in Southport, in the 1980s.

First we have an image of the Vicar of Holy Trinity Church in May 1983 who remembers his name?

The next shot shows parishioners at
