Man stabbed three times during fight in the street

- BY BENJAMIN ROBERTSHASLAM

AMAN was stabbed three times following a fight on Scarisbrick Avenue in Southport in the early hours.

At around 1.40am on Monday, August 23, police were called to Scarisbrick Avenue over an altercation that led to two men being left in hospital with injuries.

Merseyside Police confirmed one man had been stabbed with another injured as well. Three teenage boys were arrested following the incident, aged 14, 15 and 16-years-old.

One of the men is believed to have been stabbed three times, twice in his back and once in his front, with him undergoing surgery to treat his wounds.

Carla Norbury, a close friend of the two injured men, held a christening for her one-year-old son on Sunday August 22, where one of the victims, aged 29, was the godfather to her son.

The mum-of-two said: “It was my little boy’s christening and the man that was stabbed was my son’s godfather. We had all been out, had a lovely day.

“It got to around eight or nine o’clock and a group of them said they were going to go out into Southport. I’m pregnant so I didn’t go and my partner said he didn’t want to go.

“Next thing was I was in bed and woke up at 4am and I have a missed call off his partner who said he was stabbed three times, twice in his back and once in his front.

“He was in theatre for hours and then came out at about 9.30am. Initially they tried keyhole surgery on his bowel then had to do a bowel resection.

“He’s still in hospital now and the last I heard was that he is only able to drink water and can’t eat anything.”

Carla’s best friend’s fiance, who is also a father to a seven-year-old son, isn’t the only casualty to come from the altercation. Another man, who was out with the group, also needed surgery on his arm after trying to break the fight up.

The three teens have been released on conditional bail, with the mental health student nurse describing the incident as “shocking”.

The 28-year-old said: “My friend said as soon as they walked round the corner they put their hoods up. You could tell they were looking for trouble. Obviously they weren’t out in the clubs drinking, she said they were just wandering around. It’s shocking.”

Carla was also quick to thank the door staff that were involved in the incident, with two of the teens arrested being detained by the staff.

She said: “My friend wanted me to say that they’re grateful for all their help. It was them that detained two of the lads otherwise they would have ran away. Two bouncers ran over and grabbed the two young lads otherwise I think they may have got away.”

Detective Inspector Paul Gillies said: “If you were in Southport town centre in the early hours of [Monday] and saw anything or anyone suspicious then please let us know. Information you hold could be vital to our investigation.

“Our message is clear to those who choose to carry knives: it is just not worth the risk. We work tirelessly as a force to tackle knife crime and if you carry a knife it is only a matter of time before you end up hurt or arrested.
