Of their hands

Once the opener became established there was really no point in the innings when the S&B attack looked like containing him.

The best home bowler was Angus Gailey, who bowled Gary Knight for 32.

The other wicket was taken by Bobby Wincer, courtesy of a fine catch by Carney, and it gained his side a point whose value will become clear over the next fortnight.

Otherwise it made no difference at all to the price of fish.

Attention now shifts to Sefton Park’s wonderful ground and S&B’s players would be grateful if as many supporters as possible could make the trip.

Southport and Birkdale’s second team enjoyed mixed fortunes in their two games over the weekend but their victory over Ormskirk in Saturday’s match should go a long way towards ensuring they will not suffer relegation from the Premier League this season.

Michael Gill made an unbeaten 100 for the home side in the first innings of that game but Tom Baybutt’s four for 74 enabled his side to limit

Ormskirk’s total to 197 for five.

Adam Phillips 71-ball 96 included 15 fours and a six and it all but took his side home to a valuable victory.

On Sunday Nick Devlin’s 42 helped S&B’s second team to post 167 in 44.1 overs against Northern but that total was overhauled for the loss of three wickets with Biley Banerjee making 92. Mike

Lightbown took three for 73.

S&B’s most successful senior side this year has been the third team, who have already won their league, and on Sunday S&B recorded another victory when they defeated Orrell Red Triangle by 47 runs. Birender Kapoor made 51 in S&B’s 177 and Charlie Green’s seven for 42 prevented ORT from getting close to that total.

Everyone at Trafalgar Road has been deeply saddened recently by the deaths of Eddie Cowen, Peter Walker and Neil McQuaid.

Obituaries for these three very distinguished and long-serving members will appear in the Visiter over the next fortnight. In the meantime their families are in the thoughts of all at S&B, the Club they served with honour, the Club they honoured with their service.
