Alfie first to land top title

YOUNG Alfie

Donnison claimed a slice of sporting history for Aintree ABC at the weekend – at the tender age of 12-years-old.

The talented young boxer became the first national champion in the 10-year history of his club when he won the National Cadets 48-50kgs title in Newcastle.

Aintree ABC head coach Neil Maher said: “Alfie did us proud. He gave two incredibly brave performances in the semi-final and final and we were thrilled for him.”

Alfie did it the hard way, giving away height and reach in his semi-final against a strong youngster from Peterborough Police ABC, Osker Stocks, and edging a hard fought contest on a split decision.

The following day he lined up in the final against another strong boy, Keenan O’Connor of Derby City ABC, and again gave away height and reach but this time left nothing to chance producing a courageous display to earn a unanimous points decision and the title national schoolboys cadets champion.

Alfie has been with Aintree ABC since he was nine years old but will now always have the distinction of becoming the club’s first national champion.

Celebrating a national champion is not a new experience to Liverpool’s Rotunda ABC, meanwhile, and they celebrated Jamie Preston winning the Male Class A Under 30kg championship when he beat Morgan Skyme of the Wiseman ABC by a unanimous decision.

The most successful Mersey club at the championships though was Everton Red Triangle, who saw two of their youngsters have their hands held aloft at the end of the final.

Tony Preston was crowned Male Cadet Under 44kg champion when he beat James Jordan of Newark ABC by a split decision, while clubmate Alfie Taylor Satchell was crowned Male Class A, Under 32kg champion after a unanimous decision over Isaac Ward of Ward Deagnans ABC.
