SUPERSTITION
A rabbit’s foot – specifically the left hind foot – has long been considered a totem of good luck. This belief is thought to stem from the system of African American folk magic known as “hoodoo”.
Superstitions relating to rabbits aren’t just limited to their feet. Rabbits have for centuries been associated with posterity and fertility – quite probably because of their reputation for prolific breeding – and it is said that saying the word “rabbit” three times in a row on the first day of the month will bring you good luck that month.
Folklore also implies that it is good luck for a rabbit to cross your path, that seeing a black rabbit is bad luck, and that seeing a white rabbit is a death omen – which sounds even more unlucky than seeing a black one.
