I have seen that you often shoot around livestock in buildings. I have a farm that is plagued with large numbers of crows eating the cattle feed and wanted to know if I’m okay to shoot near livestock with a shotgun.

Tom says: I only shoot close to buildings and animal pens to sort out a corvid problem if I have been asked to do so by the farmer. I would always advise that you talk to your farmer before starting because it can cause issues such as spooking stock or generally being loud and annoying for the farmer.

The cattle where I shoot are very docile and don’t take any notice of me shooting, however this can be different depending on the breed. If the farmer does give you permission to sort out the crows be aware of how the cattle react to the first few shots and adjust accordingly. If they spook and risk injury to themselves or others then you will have to cease shooting and attack the crows from another angle – decoying away from the buildings can often be very effective.
