Classic line up

-

I am thinking of having a new stock made for a classic side-by-side. If the stocker asks me to specify the chequering, what should I ask for?

Mike says:

Don’t go for a pattern that is too coarse, or too fine. Coarse chequering would have to be cut deep, or the diamonds would have blunt points, while very fine chequering can easily fill in with the sweat and muck acquired while game shooting. Chequering is defined by the number of lines per inch, and there is a wide range, generally from 16 to 32. However, the most popular patterns tend to fall in the 22 to 28 range, which seems to give the best grip on a shotgun.
