It’s not just fox sounds that can tell you that your quarry is approaching – here are just a few to keep your ears open for:
• will stamp their feet as a warning alert.
• even in the dark of night, will make
chatter alarm calls if a fox passes nearby.
• might start bleating suddenly – if this happens, it
can be worth a look. Likewise, cows might start lowing.
• may start barking if a fox gets too close.
• will make a “vut-vut” noise if they see something
that they don’t like, which definitely includes foxes. • alarm calls are often an excellent indicator of predators – they make a lot of different sounds though, so you need to learn which ones to listen out for.
• All manner of other birds also make alarm calls – these include blackbirds, thrushes, wrens, woodpeckers, and so on. It’s well worth learning what each species sounds like, as it can give you a real edge to get an early warning of the approach of Monsieur Le Reynard’s approach!
